Which lead magnet metrics matter?
Measure each step separately: a website visit, a call-to-action click, an assessment start, a completed submission, and a useful conversation. These events describe different behavior. Counting them as interchangeable conversions hides where a funnel loses people.
Choose the business outcome first. If the goal is a conversation with a relevant prospect, work backward to the earlier signals. A marketing-site CTA click is evidence that someone activated a link, not proof that the destination loaded or that the prospect completed an assessment.
How do you calculate conversion rates?
Define the numerator, denominator, and time window for every rate. Assessment completion rate might mean completed assessments divided by started assessments. Visit-to-conversation rate might mean attributed conversations divided by eligible landing-page sessions. Write those definitions beside the report.
Do not divide event counts by people and call the result a percentage of people without accounting for repeat actions. The same visitor can click twice or complete an assessment on a later day. Choose a consistent counting method and acknowledge when identity or attribution is incomplete.
- Visit → CTA click: does the page motivate a next step?
- Assessment start → completion: is the experience clear and worthwhile?
- Completion → conversation: is the handoff relevant?
- Conversation → opportunity: does the offer match the audience?
What does campaign attribution tell you?
Campaign parameters label a link’s source, medium, campaign, and placement. They can help distinguish a homepage demo link from an article link. They do not by themselves connect the same person across websites or prove that a click caused a later sale.
Use predictable, nonpersonal labels and avoid putting emails, assessment answers, or account tokens into analytics events. If an experience crosses domains, verify the destination’s measurement and identity configuration before claiming that its funnel is connected.
How do you avoid misleading reports?
Distinguish a measured zero from a missing connection or an unavailable metric. Check whether the chosen date range has finished processing, and verify that only one intended tag sends each event. A second installation can inflate numbers without changing the underlying behavior.
Review the funnel alongside a small sample of real, permissioned lead outcomes. Numbers reveal where to investigate; the assessment answers and human conversations explain what to improve. Treat early results as a baseline rather than a promise of future performance.
